Nature of training opportunity

One week in the Health and Safety Section.

Training outcome

The student will spend time undertaking the following:

  • Animal Licensing visits (January) (Pet shops, Cat & Dog Boarding establishments)

  • Water sampling (Swimming pools, Jacuzzis and Garra Rufa fish tanks) Flexible

  • Multiagency working in relation to Chesterfield Town centre to reduce violence at work risks. 

The placement will give broad insight into all intervention areas. The interventions will be broadly relating to current workloads and reactive work which comes into the department during the placement.

Dependant on officers’ availability.

Specific requirements

Relevant job knowledge commensurate with 2 years study for a CIEH recognised degree in Environmental Health.

Student Member of the CIEH.

Good verbal and written communication skills (in order to deal with Members of the Public and colleagues by letter, telephone or face to face).

The ability to work in a team environment.

The ability to use own initiative displaying tact and discretion at all times as the candidate will have access to confidential information and will be dealing with Members of the Public.

Computer literacy as candidate will be required to interrogate data bases, write reports and design web pages, leaflets, utilise email and navigate the web.

Additional comments

PPE will be provided by the Authority, however the successful candidate will be expected to dress smartly during time with the Authority and provide a waterproof coat.

The student will have to arrange their own accommodation and transport to and from work.

Office hours are 9.00 to 5.00pm, however students may be expected to start before and leave after these hours to ensure service delivery.
