Bereavement Guidelines Toolkit

Advice and Information for Bereaved Families 



This toolkit has been prepared to assist local authorities when required under the provisions of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 etc to deal with a death in the work place.

The Heath and Safety Executive has produced a Work Related Death Protocol that has been published and can be accessed at  http://www.hse.gov.uk/enforce/investigators.pdf 

This contains guidance for those investigating work related deaths.

This tool kit has been designed so that it can be downloaded by a local authority then cut and pasted onto that authority’s headed note paper. This give the information a ‘personal’ feel, important in establishing trust between the local authority and the bereaved family.

The Tool Kit contains

  1. A letter of introduction from the local authority to the bereaved family,
  2. An advice booklet, entitled ‘Advice and Information for Bereaved Families’, to accompany the letter of introduction,
  3. Additional Information - links to a number of publications which should be sent with the letter of introduction and the advice booklet, and which should be obtained by the local authority.

Local authorities should add any further information that they feel may be of assistance to the bereaved family.

The Chartered Institute of Environmental Health wishes to acknowledge the work undertaken by Keith James of the City and County of Cardiff Council in adapting the Health and Safety Executive’s publication ‘Advice and Information for Bereaved Families’ (MISC199) and the Welsh Local Government Association for their assistance with the translation of this Tool Kit.
